Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou, Paris, France

The Centre Pompidou is a multicultural complex in the Beaubourg area of Paris. With over 8 million visitors per year, this iconic building has become a major tourist attraction since its opening in 1977. Initially, all of the functional structural elements of the building were colour-coded: green pipes are plumbing, blue ducts are for climate control, electrical wires are encased in yellow, and circulation elements and safety devices are red. On 7 levels and a floor area of 25.5 acres, the building houses the Bibliothèque Publique d'Information, a vast public library; the Musée National d'Art Moderne, which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe; and IRCAM, a centre for music and acoustic research.
